Since 2003 the Leo Kestenberg Project, together with numerous cooperating partners in Germany and abroad, has dedicated itself to the life and work of the renowned music educator and music policy reformer, Leo Kestenberg.

The project's mission is to research, describe and appreciate Kestenberg's reformist legacy in music pedagogy, the so-called "Kestenberg reform", whose dimensions have extended far beyond his own lifetime. The project's work in music pedagogy, musicology and the arts is to sustain, further develop and disseminate his intellectual legacy.

In collaboration with the University Archive of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), research and documentation are likewise a field of responsibility of the Leo Kestenberg Project.

In addition, a collegial cooperation exists with the Archive of Israeli Music in Tel Aviv, which houses the major part of the Kestenberg estate, including correspondence, lecture manuscripts, notes and pictures.

In cooperation with the Berlin University of the Arts and the Leo Kestenberg Music School in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district of Berlin, the Leo Kestenberg Project also supports active discussion and debate about Kestenberg's life and work, e.g. in interdisciplinary events such as symposia, thematic concert and lecture evenings, and artist studios. A special focus in this context is to promote the training and continuing education of budding young musicians and musicologists, whether through direct participation or through the initiation and support of separate projects, such as international student exchanges.

The aim is to create a globally active network of teachers, artists, scholars, and of Kestenberg's contemporaries. Intensive contacts already exist with Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, the USA and the Czech Republic.

Beyond this, the responsibilities of the Leo Kestenberg Project extend to international exchange and collaboration with  centres of musical training and continuing education, orchestras and ensembles, music publishers, museums and other institutions for cultural and historic documentation.

With the Leo Kestenberg Website as the communication interface, the Leo Kestenberg Project seeks to lay the cornerstone for intercultural, musicological, pedagogical and artistic exchange about Kestenberg's life and work: to collect contacts and document comments and recollections, to provide information about current projects in music education, scholarship and music, and to report on international research.

A long-term goal is the establishment of a Kestenberg Foundation that could secure funding and make possible more far-reaching projects in the spirit of Kestenberg's striving for unified music education from kindergarten through the university level.
